Why do signs have elements and modalities?
In Western astrological tradition, the twelve zodiac signs form four groups called elements — fire, earth, air and water — and three modes called cardinal, fixed and mutable. Those categories give astrologers a way to organize symbolic themes, not a reliable test of character.
